Day 13 of my 30 day NaNoWriMo challenge: Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. It occurs when the 13th day of the month in the calendar that falls on a Friday, which happens at least once every year but can occur up to three times in the same year. For example, 2015 had a Friday the 13th in February, March, and November; 2017 through 2020 had two Friday the 13ths each.
Friday the 13th occurs in any month that begins on a Sunday.
A superstition is a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation” or “an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature, or God resulting from superstition.” Often, it arises from ignorance, a misunderstanding of science or causality, a belief in fate or magic, or fear of that which is unknown.
I’ll openly admit I’m not a fan of the unknown, after all, who is? So we tend to use beliefs in place to gain a sense of control of our lives. Whether we choose to go out or not on Friday the 13th, or we don’t go near black cats whatever we use as our belief.
Movies like Friday the 13th and Scream depict fear and horror on Friday the 13th which slasher movies are born out of due to the horror genre, therefore, re-enforcing the belief that something bad is going to…
