In the eye of the storm

Since Friday, March 18th, Sydney, Australia, has been hit with a torrential downpour of over 100mm of relentless rain and, in many areas, flooding, therefore causing residents to evacuate their homes.

While I do live in Sydney, I do live in an area that so far has not been hit by flooding so I’m safe for now.

This time last year, Sydney was hit with months of drought with no rain for months and so now it seems mother nature is making up for the lost time.

Despite multiple warnings, people are still, unfortunately, driving through floodwaters and therefore require rescuing.

Even after the rain subsides, there’s still the issue of what will be a massive clean-up. While parts of Australia do have earthquakes, Sydney doesn’t but we are still at the mercy of natural disasters of bushfires in Summer and now flooding.

I feel for people who have to leave their homes during this time and seek shelter elsewhere. Many are able to stay with family but those who can’t, are forced to stay with strangers in an evacuation shelter until the storm passes.

Australia is resilient though and often does bounce back from natural disasters. Even last year when we were having bad bushfires we rebuilt and moved on.
